Monster Debugger is open source debugging software for Adobe Flash, Flex and AIR. This tool helped developers create good Flash products. Unfortunately Flash has gotten some bad press over time and everyone, including ourselves, has switched back to HTML. Even though we stopped maintaining or actively supporting the app, we're still proud that Monster Debugger helped thousands of developers worldwide create better products.
Monster Debugger v1
The first version of Monster Debugger was created back in 2008 by Ferdi Koomen, a previous partner at De Monsters. The application was created purely for internal use and helped us considerably with the creation of various Flash projects. We realized that a lot of people could benefit from the app so we set out to create a new optimized version which was open sourced as version 2.0 in February 2009.
Monster Debugger v2
Monster Debugger 2 was a huge success! We had over 56.000 downloads in the first couple of months. Our team iterated on the app quite a bit and we received very nice contributions from other developers. Because we had more ideas we started working on version 3.0 at the end of 2009.
Monster Debugger v3
Monster Debugger 3.0 is the latest version of the app. Its loaded with nifty tools such as memory monitors, live editing properties, running methods, custom traces and debugging Flash on mobile devices (yes this was possible at one point!). At De Monsters we mainly used Monster Debugger to create rich animated sites, AIR apps and (live) video streaming products.
To get familiar with Monster Debugger we created a tutorial game. The purpose of the game was to hack yourself through each level using Monster Debugger as tool. It was a fun way for developers to discover the app’s new features or get an introduction to the app. The game got nominated for a Dutch Game Award for best serious game back in 2011.
